Honestly, I’m surprised too. But not like totally surprised because for real, that makes sense. The short is that earlier this year Google started ranking websites that are mobile-friendly higher on the SERPs (Search Engine Results Page) than those that aren’t when users search while on a mobile device. So the first question is, what qualifies as “mobile-friendly?” A webpage is eligible for the “mobile-friendly” label if it meets the following criteria, as detected in real time by Googlebot:
- Avoids software that is not common on mobile devices, like Flash
- Uses text that is readable without zooming
- Sizes content to the screen so users don’t have to scroll horizontally or zoom
- Places links far enough apart so that the correct one can be easily tapped
FUN FACT: Nearly 60% of internet searches are now from mobile devices
Still unsure if your website qualifies? Good news, Google has a mobile website test, click here to test your website. This is just another reason that web designers design websites ‘mobile first.’ FUN FACT: nearly 60% of internet searches are now from mobile devices (source). Yeah, I know!
This is a pretty big deal. This is another step to add to the Search Engine Optimization process. All my websites are responsive (formats to the device you’re on) and mobile-friendly. If you have any questions, leave a comment below or holler at me!
